The Flooring Liquidators team has compiled a list of our Top 5 favorite flooring trends for 2019. While these aren’t the only trends out there, we think they’re the biggest, and the most likely to continue well into 2019 and beyond into the years to come.

Without further ado, here are the Flooring Liquidators Top 5 Flooring Style Trends of 2019

  1. Wood trends & wood looks
  2. Going Green with sustainable materials
  3. Black & white tile patterns & mosaics
  4. Waterproof floors of all types
  5. Carpeting & soft, luxurious surfaces

Let’s dive deeper into each of the trends on our list:

1. Wood trends & wood looks

Hardwood has traditionally been one of the most sought-after flooring looks because of its natural beauty and the sheer value that real hardwood can add to a home for resale.

That said, hardwood flooring is still as popular as ever – but it’s been joined in recent years by wood-look hard surface materials like laminate, vinyl and ceramic tile. These wood-look mimics have been the #1 trend in flooring for two years running – and we won’t be surprised if that trend continues for years to come!

Shaw Floorte is a great example of vinyl floors that look and feel like real wood. These floors are waterproof as well, and come in stylish tones. This Floorte Classico Plus Plank in Luce is a great example of blonde wood tones that are becoming popular as we move into 2019.

Why wood-look over wood? It comes down to accessibility. Not only can real wood be expensive to install and maintain, but it doesn’t always work well in every area of the home. A good example is bathroom flooring, where wood looks have recently become incredibly popular.

Popular styles and colors for wood-look flooring include lighter, warmer tones like greys and blondes. You’ll also find more and more textured or character-driven flooring, including handscraped, wirebrushed and distressed styles. That’s right – scratches and wear are in. They give wood floors and their wood-look counterparts alike individual personality that will make your designs truly unique in 2019.

Handscraped wood flooring looks like this Bristol Victorian by Johnson Hardwood are coming into fashion. Floors like this feature ripples and indentations that make each floor a unique work of art, fitting perfectly into more rustic home designs.

The natural character trend plays particularly well into another ongoing trend – the rustic farmhouse style that’s become popular in many kitchens.

2. ‘Going Green’ with sustainable materials

Another side of the wood flooring trend is the movement towards the use of sustainable building and design materials in the home. Younger homeowners in particular seem to care much more about where the products they purchase are coming from.

This can include natural, responsibly-sourced flooring like cork & bamboo, as well as recycled materials such as reclaimed wood. Additionally, most carpet made today consists of recycled materials.

What makes these ‘green’ floors? Cork, for example, is a non-toxic substance taken from the bark of cork oaks that grow along the Mediterranean Sea. This bark regenerates quickly after every harvest (about once every decade), and the cork trees live healthily for up to two centuries each.

Bamboo flooring is one sustainable option that’s been surging in popularity lately. Whether you’re looking for wild and interesting patterns like Tiger Natural Bamboo Expressions by US Floors on the right, or a more traditional, textured look like the Hazelnut Strand Woven Bamboo T&G by Eagle Creek pictured on the left, bamboo floors offer just as much diversity as other hardwood species.

If we had to pick just one trend to last past 2019, we predict (and hope) that it would be the green flooring trend.

3. Black & white tile patterns & mosaics

One of the cooler and more unusual trends we’re seeing more and more of now is mosaic tile being laid on bathroom floors. Black and white patterns are the most common choice, likely because of the sophisticated vintage look these tones tend to put off.

Get creative with shapes and patterns ranging from straightforward subway tiles to square grids, hexagons to herringbone, chevron and more. Mosaics create a tone of visual variation, while also adding texture to every surface they touch.

Some designers opt to stick to just white tile, instead mixing up the shapes so that they’re different on floors, walls and in the shower.

To achieve a more modern retro or farmhouse look, look no further than the vintage black and white designs of stenciled tiles. Create contrast with white walls and dark floors, and really let the beauty of monochrome shine this year.

You can mix and match shapes to lay whatever design you can imagine.

4. Waterproof floors of all types

If you haven’t heard about waterproof flooring yet, get ready to start hearing more and more. Once upon a time, tile was considered the only truly waterproof option for floors – but today, you can find waterproof products in almost every category. Waterproof vinyl, waterproof laminate, waterproof carpet – even waterproof wood!

And being waterproof isn’t the only advantage these floors have over the competition:

  • Variety: You’ll find upscale, trendy waterproof looks everywhere you look, from handscraped wood look vinyl to laminate that mimics the look and feel of stone tile.
  • Durability: These floors are tough – not only do they block moisture, but they’re generally resistant to scratches and stains.
  • Easy to clean: You’ll find few other floors as low-maintenance as some of the waterproof styles available today. Simply sweep & mop regularly!

Would you believe that this floor is not only laminate, but waterproof?! The look is Mohawk’s Revwood Plus Sawmill Ridge in Gingerglow Oak.

5. Carpeting & soft, luxurious surfaces

Finally, we cap off our list with an entry that likely won’t surprise anyone – carpeting. It’s still the most popular flooring type (though lots of hard surface contenders are giving carpet a run for its money!)

Why has carpet remained so popular? Unlike every other flooring category, carpeting offers a soft, plush and warm feel that no other flooring can. You’ll find trendy looks in solid neutral carpeting, bright colors, patterned surfaces and even carpet tile.

One surprising trend to note is that carpet has extended out from its traditional areas of the home. You’ll still commonly find it used as a floor covering in bedrooms and living rooms, but it’s begun to become popular in entryways as well.

Home entrances are traditionally home to darker, easy-to clean hard surface flooring, but there’s been a movement towards using carpeting or large, beautiful area rugs as statement pieces at main doorways. The idea is simple – make your entryway, the place where guests take their first steps into your home, as luxurious as possible.
